On the 18th of June 2019, Linnanmäki in Finland successfully opened their key attraction and biggest project ever named Taiga, the fastest LSM Double Launch Coaster on the northern hemisphere respectively in Scandinavia.

Linnanmäki is Finland’s oldest and most popular amusement park, located in the Alppila quarter of Helsinki.

Taiga is a completely unique coaster, customized to fit the challenging terrain in between different rides and buildings. The track of Taiga passes four other rides of the park and the 52 meter top hat can be seen from across the city of Helsinki.

This highly thrilling LSM Double Launch Coaster, is more than 1000 meters long and reaches a top speed of about 106 km/h featuring a total of four inversions. Taiga is full of surprises and riders will have no time to take a breath while whizzing through this stunning layout guaranteeing more than enough adrenaline. With two launches, a number of weightlessness moments, gripping elements and electrifying turns, this coaster can be described as a coaster enthusiast’s dream.

The two brightly colored eagle themed look alike trains, seating 16 passengers each, offer a very high comfort for the passengers and an hourly capacity of 860 passengers.

INTAMIN is proud of having contributed once again to the success of Linnanmäki and would like to thank the entire team for the outstanding cooperation.

NEAR MISSES

Mid of June 2019, Guangzhou Sunac Land in China successfully opened the World’s first Dueling LSM Triple Launch Coaster, named Dueling Dragons.

This most unique coaster features a layout, in which two dragon themed trains, one suspended and one sit-down, are dueling each other with a number of thrilling near-miss elements.

Utilizing Intamin’s most powerful LSM drive system, the trains of Dueling Dragons are simultaneously launched forward into the loop. Stalling by gravity in the loop, the trains then move backwards into the already passed LSM section. Launching backwards, both trains pick up even more speed, allowing them to reach the crest of the 50 meter high vertical spike. This is when riders experience a stunning moment of zero-gravity weightlessness airtime with their eyes facing down. Accelerated by the LSM drive system for a third time, the trains reach their top speed of approx. 100 km/h (sit-down train) respectively 110 km/h (suspended train) while rushing forward, passing through the loop. Out of the loop, passengers will experience several heart-pounding inversions, breath-taking airtime elements and a total of five near-miss configurations, bringing riders feet respectively arms close to the other train. Even spectators will be amazed while watching the two dragons dueling each other.

Another distinctive element is the fact that the physical track length of the sit-down layout is 790 meters and of the suspended layout 830 meters, whereas the actual traveled distance is 980 meters and 1030 meters, which is a result of the forward-backward-forward launch.

This Dueling LSM Triple Launch Coaster is not only highly innovative in terms of layout and ride experience but also in respect to the technology incorportated. Besides the integrated water-cooling system for the LSM drives, this coaster features INTAMIN’s newest train design with ergonomically shaped seats, ensuring highest safety and maximum comfort.

INTAMIN is proud of having contributed to the success of Guangzhou Sunac Land.

With the start of the new season, Djurs Sommerland in Denmark put Denmark’s highest, fastest and most impressive Gyro Swing named Tigeren into public operation.

Tigeren, meaning “Tiger” in Danish, is themed in connection to the powerful and mighty animal living in the Asian jungles. Located at the Wild Asia themed area of the park it joins Drage Kongen, INTAMIN’s Suspended Family Coaster (installed in 2017), Piraten, INTAMIN’s Ultra Coaster and Juvelen, the Family Launch Coaster (both opened in 2013).

The swinging pendulum of Tigeren reaches a top speed of 100 km/h combined with a comfortable slow rotation speed of the gondola. Most important of all is the suspended seating arrangement for 40 passengers, all facing outward, producing a sensational feeling of flying. As the pendulum passes through the vertical position, the passengers experience the thrill of increased G-forces. Swinging to a height of up to 45 meters with a 120 degree angle of swing, the sensation of almost complete weightlessness is dazzling any rider daring to try out Tigeren.

Besides the seats and the restraint, which both are guaranteeing highest passenger comfort, also the main drive represents a highly innovative design. Executed as a direct drive, it is the most powerful on the market and at the same time almost noiseless. INTAMIN’s Gyro Swing is not only the most spectacular, it is probably the quietest round ride of this class and size.

INTAMIN is proud of having contributed once again to the success of Djurs Sommerland and would like to sincerely thank the entire team for the great cooperation.

On April 19th, Heide Park Resort in Germany reopened Europe’s tallest and fastest Wooden Coaster “Colossos” after closing it in July 2016 for a complete refurbishment and an entire re-tracking.

Colossos returns and a gigantic battle between fire and wood begins!

At the entrance to the attraction, daring Colossos riders will be introduced to the new story with the new logo emblazoned above the entrance and a matching soundtrack for the fight of the giants. The colossal new structure is 25 meters high and appears to rise straight from the broken ground with shining eyes and blazing flame effects.

With a height of over 50 meters and a top speed of approx. 110 km/h, Colossos stands as one of the World’s tallest and fastest wooden coasters. With the two new trains, each carrying up to 30 passengers, a maximum theoretical capacity of approx. 800 people per hour can be achieved. Besides the new trains, Colossos also received a completely new track. Unlike traditional Wooden Coasters, its track was prefabricated, laser-cut in a factory to a high degree of precision and with sections designed to snap together like Lego pieces. Planks were tightly bonded in multiple layers instead of traditionally nailed together by hand.

Thank you to Heide Park Resort for the outstanding cooperation.

A new record breaker is born. Energylandia has started operation of Hyperion, Europe’s highest and fastest Mega Coaster.

Thematically, the passengers on Hyperion are to immerse themselves in a space scenario and become part of a research mission to Saturn’s moon – Hyperion. The spaceship “Hyperion_1” encounters a black hole during its mission and enters the space-time tunnel, whereupon the crew discovers another universe.

After leaving the space themed station, the train is taken up the lift hill. Time to breathe in and enjoy the fantastic views before enjoying this most thrilling ride. The first drop of this spectacular Mega Coaster is 85° and has a record-breaking 82 meter drop. At the end of the descent, the train passes through the tunnel, which is located below ground level, at a top speed of 142 km/h. The 1’450 meter long track provides everything a roller coaster fan and adrenaline junkie is looking for. The effects of weightlessness, unexpected gravitational effects, as well as rotational slopes of the track will make anyone’s heart rate increase drastically. There are fascinating positive and negative load factors and a stunning speed when climbing hills, getting into corners and, of course, plummeting down. Before jumping into brakes at the end of the ride, riders will experience an automatically set water splash.

Using INTAMIN’s state of the art trains, the seat height and especially the raised seat position where the feet do not touch the floor, allow for an experience and feeling of “flying through the air”, even for taller people. Each of the two trains seats 28 people and is designed in a configuration of 7 rows of 4 seats each, whereas the 2 inner seats are raised.

Hyperion joins the three INTAMIN Water Rides at Energylandia which started operation this year – Speed Water Coaster INTAMIN’s Water Coaster, Anaconda the Spillwater ride and Jungle Adventure a Rapids Ride.

INTAMIN is proud of having contributed to the success of Energylandia again and would like to thank the entire team for the great cooperation.

If those would have had more ridership, INTAMIN’s Triple Launch LSM Launch Coaster Soaring with Dragon at Hefei Wanda Theme Park as well as the Wooden Coaster T Express at Everland in South Korea would have made it to the top of the ranking too.

We are very, very excited with the results of this independent survey and INTAMIN would like to sincerely thank all the people around the world who submitted ballots to the poll and for their continuous trust and support during the past years and the many more to come.

LAUNCHES

At the beginning of April 2018, Parc Le Pal in France started public operation of its biggest attraction ever named Yukon Quad. On this ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) themed Family Launch Coaster, riders are launched into the landscape of northern Canada.

After the pre-show, the door opens to take the ATV into the 1000 meter long “canadian wilderness”. The quads are being launched to reach 65 km/h followed by the first narrow curve taking riders up to the highest point at 12 meters. Yukon Quad drivers are at this time feeling accelerations of up to 3 Gs. Going down the hill, the track continues to change directions low on ground, which increases the feeling of speed immensly.

After these thrilling figures, riders are launched very smoothly for the second time to 85 km/h. The tight curve after the second launch makes the riders holding on tight to the handlebars while whizzing past trees and rocks. Before being thrown on the last hill and an S-hump, a very narrow curve brings the train to a very smooth brake making the end of the ride really dynamic. After having enjoyed this exceptional adventure of this crazy hike in the canadian north… riders get off with a big, big smile.

INTAMIN’s Family Launch Coaster, as its name suggests, is a more family oriented, but at the same time still quite thrilling. Using Intamin’s state of the art friction wheel drive system in combination with a unique and highly popular vehicle design, this coaster type has proven to be an exciting variation on INTAMIN’s family of launch coasters. The upright seating position, in a side by side arrangement with two passengers per vehicle, in combination with the individual lap-bar paired with foamed seats and on top of all this the exciting launch/boost experience, guarantees a safe and unique ride experience combined with a high comfort for passengers.

INTAMIN is proud of having contributed to the success of Parc Le Pal and would like to thank the entire team for the great cooperation.

Linnanmäki Amusement Park, in Helsinki, Finland, announces their biggest roller coaster project ever: Taiga is getting ready to launch!

Something exciting has been brewing at Linnanmäki Amusement Park during the past winter. The amusement park has been posting teasers in the social media implying that “Taiga is in the air”. And now, it is finally time to announce that a spectacular roller coaster is arriving at Linnanmäki in 2019!

“We are very excited to finally announce that Linnanmäki is making its greatest ride project ever in co-operation with ride manufacturer INTAMIN. This most unique high-profile launch coaster can be described as a coaster enthusiasts’ dream”, explains Pia Adlivankin, Managing Director of Linnanmäki with great excitement.

This new ride will have a top hat height at 52 meters, Finland’s longest track length of 1’104 meters and a furious maximum speed of 106 km per hour. In addition, this new Double LSM Launch Coaster will have two launches and four inversions.

INTAMIN is a European coaster manufacturer with the largest number of launch coasters in operation all over the world.

“It was an easy choice to select Intamin as our ride provider, since they had the most creative layout suggestion for our challenging terrain. We are truly satisfied with our biggest ride acquisition ever” Anssi Tamminen, Technical Director of Linnanmäki comments on the project.

Linnanmäki expects this ride to be one of the most exciting rides in Europe.

“This coaster will impress everyone. The final layout design phase was a true collaborative effort with Linnanmäki, and we were able to come up with a roller coaster which will set new standards not only in Finland but in the whole Northern Europe and even beyond”, INTAMIN’s Executive Vice President Sascha Czibulka proudly explains.

This fierce new roller coaster, Taiga, will be launched during the 2019 season.

New Ride Concept Sky Jump

WORLD’S FIRST FREE FALL TOWER FEATURING A TRUE “SKY DIVING” EXPERIENCE

The SKY JUMP is a highly unusual attraction, which is the first of its kind to offer the guests an unforgettable sky diving experience. The development of this very unique attraction was only possible by using a special magnetic braking system designed by INTAMIN. This patented brake system allowed INTAMIN to create this absolutely unique free fall tower attraction.

After the very successful introduction of the first SKY JUMP at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida in 2014 (which features a 102m high tower, a ring-shaped vehicle holding up to 32 passengers and the unique 95° tilting mechanism), Intamin has now developed a less talland lower capacity version, resulting in a very attractive price for this type of unique thrill ride.

The SKY JUMP 16 – 76M  features a 76 meters high lattice tower structure and is equipped with two independent vehicles, each holding up to 8 passengers, which are tilting 95° face forward.

The vehicles are located on the opposite side of the tower structure. Each of the two vehicles consists of a special carrying structure, which holds 2 seat units for 4 passengers each and are equipped with the unique 95° tilting mechanism.

The passengers are seated in a moulded seat and are secured by a redundant shoulder restraint system for optimum passengers safety and comfort, which was specially designed for this highly unusual free fall tower attraction.

The two catch cars, which lift the vehicles to the top of the tower, are connected via a steel chain to the drive motor, which is located at the top of the tower. The two ride vehicles are lifted alternately and are guided on the lattice tower corner main tubes. Once the vehicle has reached the top of the tower (and after the tilting and waiting sequence), the vehicle is automatically released from the lifting system and rushes downwards giving the riders an exciting experience of weightlessness.

For the passengers the actual ride experience begins when one of two vehicles is lifted to the top of the tower. On the way up, the passengers – in an upright position like on a “normal” free fall tower and with their feet dangling freely – can enjoy the view before the vehicle comes to a stop at the top of the tower. Then the seat-unit is tilting 95° backwards and the passengers are about to experience a ‘flying’ sensation.

Being with the torso almost parallel to the ground, this is exactly the position sky divers assume once out of the airplane. The vehicle and consequently the passengers will remain in this position for a few seconds, before the vehicle is disconnected from the catch car and the riders are “skydiving” towards the ground. Accelerated by gravity only, the vehicle reaches in a 100% real free fall a speed of approx. 90 km/h.

After the pure free fall in a face-down dive position the vehicle enters the braking section and this is when the seats are automatically moving backwards into upright position and consequently take the passengers back to a vertical position – just in the same way when skydivers open their parachute. The passengers will experience a powerful but at the same time very smooth deceleration of up to 3.5 g’s within the fail safe “Eddy  Current Brakes” (magnetic braking system) along the bottom part of the tower.

The pure ride time from “take off” until “landing” is approx. 90 seconds with the highlight of an unforgettable sky diving experience and all the thrills and excitements that come along with it.

ORIGINALITY OR UNIQUENESS OF THE PRODUCT

  • There is no doubt of the uniqueness: it is a world’s first free fall ride featuring seats tilting 95°, facing riders straight down while dropping.
  • For the first time, a drop ride offers a real sky diving experience
  • Two (2) independent vehicles which hold 2 seat units for 4 passengers each
  • The elements of surprise are omnipresent: riders cannot estimate when the seats will tilt since they cannot see the top of the tower. They cannot know how long the vehicle will hold them in horizontal position facing the ground before the drop. The ground gets closer and they are wondering when the seats will tilt back again to vertical position
  • It offers extreme sensations never experienced before
  • The Sky Jump is another milestone in the development of free fall towers
  • The freefall time is approximately 5 seconds
  • The deceleration and braking is made smooth with the use of Intamin’s patented magnetic brake technology, even though the vehicle reaches a speed of 90 km/h (59 mph) during the drop

NEW TRAIN DESIGN WITH ELEVATED SEATS ON A LSM MULTI LAUNCH COASTER

TARON holds a total of 4 World Records. Besides being the fastest Multi Launch Coaster in the world, having the most powerful LSM launch drive in the world, it is also the longest multi launch of its kind in the world and the number of intersections is breaking any record – the track crosses an unbelievable 116 times.

The most important factor of TARON’s success is Intamin’s new -open- train design. Besides the track quality and obviously also the layout, it is the trains which have a very strong impact on the ride experience and whether the ride is enjoyable and will have many repeat riders or not.

One of the client’s request was that the train had to perfectly match the ride. While the high dynamic layout with its figures and changes of direction together with the quality of the track form the basis for the ride enjoyment, the train is to some extent the bridge to the passenger. Its design brings out the way the track is laid out to build up the drama of the ride experience – and can only at its best increase it.

The very open design was intended to create a particularly free, literally unrestrained ride feeling – creating the special extra kick on the fast-paced ride through Klugheim.

The ride and consequently guest experience was the center point during the train development, looking for the highest passenger comfort, the feeling of flying, an enjoyable ride experience and at all times complying with the most stringent safety standards. At first sight a contradiction.

Safety, comfort, thematic embedding and spectacular ride enjoyment are merged into the train

TARON’S TRAINS:
THE RIDE EXPERIENCE

  1. The reduced train weight (for details please refer to “TARON’s trains – technical advantages” outlined below) results in the most power efficient LSM drive system in the market. Alternatively, it is now also possible to use the higher power efficiency to launch stronger, more powerful than with any other available LSM launch system.
  2. The seat height and especially the raised seat position where the feet do not touch the floor, allow for an experience and feeling of “flying through the air”, even for taller people.
It guarantees a more thrilling ride experience, because it combines the advantages from a sit down and a suspended roller coaster (easy and fast load / unload, no obstructed view by track above the rider, feeling of suspended riding).
  3. Flat floor at entire vehicle. The flat floor of each train vehicle is at same height as the station floor. This barrier-free passage between the seats significantly speeds up the load/unload process and allows for a low dispatch time.
In addition the subjective ride feeling is very “open” because no side walls, steps, etc. are obstructing the seating position.
  4. The new ergonomically formed seat with over-the-shoulder lap bars, is seating kids from 130cm as well as “big boys” up to 135kg most safely and at the same time highly comfortable in this ‘all in one’ seat. There is no need to equip the train with special dedicated “big boy seats” negatively affecting operations, the hourly capacity of the ride and the personal feelings of some guests.
    • The seat design allows highly comfortable seating while keeping the upper body in position even at extreme lateral accelerations without obstruction of the view (compared to competitors).
    • The restraint padding offers soft, big contact areas to upper legs guaranteeing high comfort seating even during extreme uplifting g-forces.
    • The lap bar system enhances the ride experience on Taron without rigid fastening of the guest into a restraint system.
    • The seat design and consequently arrangement results in a larger than usual distance between the seat rows, which further increases the feeling of comfort and enhances the ride experience.

TARON’S TRAINS:
THE TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES

  1. All main chassis elements are made from machined material without any welded components. With the exception of the seat brackets there are no welds, since all the other parts of the train are made from solid/forged components.
  2. By using the latest machinery technology the chassis weight was significantly reduced, it weighs less than its welded counterpart and the chassis tolerances are much smaller and more precise which is crucial on LSM driven trains, as this makes it easy to maintain uniform air gaps with the track-mounted stators throughout the trains.
  3. The new chassis generation has no weld seams at all, so the maintenance efforts are significantly minimized. E.g., the NDT tests are minimized to surface NDT checks at heavily loaded spots only. In the past chassis were welded, resulting yearly / bi-yearly in extensive NDT checks depending on train cycles. These checks are very time and cost intensive.
  4. Latest “state of the art” maintenance friendly bogie system, using aluminum as light weight material instead of “heavy” steel.
